Abstract

Nowadays, aging studies has become a distinguished multidisciplinary field merging with the cutting-edge technologies to outline innovative ideas to cater the needs of seniors. Since the global geriatric population is estimated to rise rapidly, the number of people seeking to obtain caring services and wishing to be more actively engaged in life will be more apparent. A pet-like robot aiding to reduce human based high time pressure errors would be a significant contribution to nursing homes which face staff shortages. Health care professionals can also dedicate more time for their patients with the helping hand of a robot, creating opportunities to increase the quality of elderly care. Seniors who aspire day-to-day special care in home settings, interested in improving their living standards can also benefit from an amiable companion. Therefore, social robotics have taken up the job of addressing the needs of individuals in order to provide longevity solutions respectively. This study aims to bring an affordable and aesthetically pleasing robotic companion design and implementation framework employing ethnographic qualitative data research method and social constructivist worldview. Humans’ adaption experiences in order to identify the cultural challenges when interacting with robots will be collected via home sensors for this study. The intended design would connect to smart home sensors with respect to Internet of Things technologies to be able to create more intelligent and culturally sensitive design compared to the current prototypes for nursing homes in Czechia.
